SAILOR SWAPS CALL OF SEA FOR CALL TO BE PART OF MISS GLOBAL 2013Apr 27 2013
NAVY able seaman Elizabeth Rogers is swapping life at sea to grace the catwalk.
The former Laidley State High School student has been selected to represent Australia in Miss Global 2013 pageant in California.
"When I first found out, I didn't really know how to react," the 20-year-old said.
"I was overwhelmed with the excitement."
Ms Rogers is among 100 models from all over the world who will compete for the international crown in August.
"I have been involved in other competitions like Miss Universe Australia and made it through to the Queensland top six for the Girlfriend model search when I was 17, but Miss Global, by far, is the most exciting and challenging one," she said.
"I couldn't be more excited."
A Sydney-based seaman with the Royal Australian Navy's Maritime Logistics Personnel Operations, Ms Rogers first started modelling during high school but said she didn't take it seriously until recently.
She said her modelling career was no secret on board HMAS Success.
"My colleagues know that I model. The navy and my ship mates are pretty supportive of it actually," Ms Rogers said.
Ms Rogers is yet to decide the career path she with take, but in the meantime, she has found a calling in the fashion industry after modelling on the side for the past five years and featuring in hundreds of photo shoots.
"There are so many things I want to do in my life," she said.
"But my dream job would be in a position where I could constantly inspire and motivate young girls to be the best they can be.
"Modelling is portrayed as a negative, self esteem-destroying industry, but I believe it can open many doors."
Admitting the industry can be hard at times, she said she enjoyed every moment.
She will travel to Redondo Beach, California, on August 3, where she will be judged across five categories - international wear, evening wear, swimwear, prejudging interviews and top 10 finale questionnaires.
Miss Global aims to provide a platform for women from all parts of the globe to showcase their beauty, intelligence, and cultural diversity, while creating opportunities for them to advance in their careers, personal growth, and humanitarian goals.
